Black History Month in Bristol
Black History Month (BHM) is a remembrance of important
people and events in the history of the African diaspora.
Since 1976, it is celebrated annually in the United States
of America and Canada in February and the United Kingdom of
Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the month of October.
The month aims to:
• Promote knowledge of Black History and experience.
• Circulate information on positive Black contributions to
British Society.
• Heighten the confidence and awareness of Black people and
their culture heritage.

At-Bristol Science Project
Inspiring Interactions for BME educators
FREE professional development course for supplementary school leaders.
The course aims to provide:
• a free 3-day professional development course in January
2011 for
leaders and teachers to increase their skills and confidence
in
delivering inspiring, accessible science lessons
• supporting supplementary school leaders in their teaching
and
offering accredited training towards professional
qualifications in
partnership with the School of Education, UWE.
• addressing mainstream teachers’ ‘cultural competence’ in
teaching and relating to BME students
• an activity day in April 2011 held in At-Bristol for course
participants and their students (and their parents and
carers) to
allow all participants to put into practice what has been
learned during
the course.
Refugee Week
Refugee Week celebrates the contribution of refugees to
the UK through arts, cultural and education events.

Report on Refugee Week 2009
Refugee Week is a UK wide programme
of events which celebrate the contribution of refugees to
the UK. In recognition of this, EIAT and the Red Cross
planned activities aimed at raising awareness about refugees
and asylum seekers, including their achievements. This also
fits in with PSHE/Citizenship aims and links in with
Community Cohesion objectives.
