National events relevant to ethnic
minority issues.
These events are celebrated annually and this list will be updated as
information becomes available. If there are any national events you

Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January
Hundreds of events take place
on or around 27 January in the UK each year to mark Holocaust
Memorial Day. Events in your local area can be accessed
through this link. HMDT supply a free Campaign Pack for those
who wish to find out more about marking HMD in their school or
community.

Refugee Week 20th - 26th June 2011
Different pasts, shared future
Refugee Week celebrates the contribution of refugees to the UK
through arts, cultural and education events.

European Day of Languages 26th September
At the initiative of the Council of Europe,
Strasbourg, the European Day of Languages has been celebrated
every year since 2001 on 26 September. Throughout Europe, 800
million Europeans represented in the Council of Europe's 47
member states are encouraged to learn more languages, at any
age, in and out of school. Being convinced that linguistic
diversity is a tool for achieving greater intercultural
understanding and a key element in the rich cultural heritage of
our continent, the Council of Europe promotes plurilingualism in
the whole of Europe.

Black History Month - October
2011
Every year Black History Month is celebrated in the UK and
the USA. Sometimes referred to as African or Afrikan History
Month, originally a project in the USA to mark the contribution
of African Americans and other Black people. Now sometimes
widened to include the contributions of other ethnic minorities
in UK and across the world. Many sites listed below are
recommended not only for Black History Month but for use
throughout the year to include contributions of Black people in
History curriculum and other subjects.
